ICE Raids Hurt Everyone, But Especially Our Students
Immigration raids negatively impact all of society, not just undocumented immigrants. By conducting harsh and inhumane immigration raids, important industries, such as agriculture, are frozen and schools see a decline in attendance. The threat of ICE does not impact all students equally. Those with the most needs fall behind in pivotal developmental skills, such as reading. The negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be overcome with the obstacles that the federal government is imposing on working people. However, given the Trump Administration’s position on diminishing public resources like public education, these consequences will not be a top priority to address.
How can we as citizens cope with the fact that ICE and police enforcement continue to be put above our children and neighbors? As Californians, we don’t have to sit back and take this abuse from the federal government. Our students learning to read and critically think should not be a threat to the most powerful office in the nation. Our neighbors living their lives and making an honest living is not a threat to anyone. To stand by our students and immigrants, we must reform Prop. 13. Power is where the money lies and by reforming this policy that protects major corporations we could have $17 billion every year to stand by our most vulnerable community members.s why we need Prop. 13 reform now, more than ever. Students experiencing homelessness can’t wait.
Trump’s immigration raids are wreaking havoc with California’s economy and schools
