SFUSD LGBTQ+ Student Services Under Attack

San Francisco Unified School District and the state fiscal advisor are caught in a stalemate. The state fiscal advisor, Elliott Duchon, is forcing SFUSD to cut necessary positions, while SFUSD is, understandably, unwilling to do that. One position on the chopping block is R35 LGBTQ+ School Climate Coordinator, a role that oversees many district-wide initiatives to support LGBTQ+ students. SFUSD’s LGBTQ+ Student Services program has been around for 35 years, and cutting this position would all but destroy the program. There is overwhelming evidence that this program has had a marked effect in improving the quality of life of our LGBTQ+ students. It’s programs like these that make San Francisco such a great place to live and learn.

With LGBTQ+ rights under attack from the federal administration, it is now more important than ever to have these programs to support LGBTQ+ students. We are living in a time where it is terrifying to be openly LGBTQ+. San Francisco has always been a gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community, and we need to protect those members of our community with programs like SFUSD’s LGBTQ+ Student Services. There are ways to balance the budget without putting these programs at risk. We could raise revenue for public schools, including by reforming Proposition 13, which would restore $17 billion dollars every single year to our public services, schools, and communities. We need to protect LGBTQ+ students, and Prop. 13 reform has a role to play in that mission.
